Will be sold as a small and letter size print at Anime Expo 2010! My table is B17 \o/
a;dslkfja; YES I'm finally done with con prep ffffffffffff /rolls ლ(இ◡இლ)
I'm not sure what's with this sudden Vocaloid spurt I'm having 8D; BRS was fun to draw, and I think I used every single shade of gray I own in this orz;;
I should probably take some typography classes though, because hand printing those letters was a beeetch. I tried to make it look like the army font, and I'm just glad it came out not too slanted QuQ A lot of thanks to =e1n for helping with the gun and pushing/shoving me to finish this
Ahahaha this is my second time critiquing another's work, and am still in need of improvement over my art skills (Few say I'm good, but despite that I know I need to get better). However, my critical thinking is better than my execution, so I'll do my best in critiquing this artwork.
Now, how to break this down?
Layout: An illustrator has to be good to understand how to use white space. If a person just go gun-ho on using white space for background without thinking, then the image will fall apart for most viewers. This is a good example of using white space with the character positioning, objects, effects and type. Experienced illustrators can balance the image by taking up how much white space they need to make it look visually appealing along with the colours,
Now moving on to other elements of the layout, the main focus of the image is the chibi Black Rock Shooter (the subject). It is definitely important for the character to be the main focus of the image as that's what this artwork is about, right? So she has to be at the top of the hierarchy of the image when it comes to the size of her overall composition, with the text "BRS" as #2 and the small blocks and chains flying around as # 3.
Also, having your focus move from left to right of the artwork is one of the pluses that illustrators should know how to do it as this strategy is known as "continuation".
Colour: I usually have trouble with copic colours since I don't know which copic colour will suit best to bring out the depth. However, this is no problem for someone like =cartoongirl7.
Using base colours and shadow colours is good, but a good artist needs to know how to make them distinct in fleshing out the image as well. This here is why I look up to =cartoongirl7's artworks as one of the examples in marker colouring as everything is smooth and clean in texture, and the amount of shadows are really well shaped, giving it a kind of cel-painted feeling, but with markers.
The blue flames show this nice glowing effect. From what I suspect, maybe two or three markers were used to make the blue flames (along with layering, blending and brushstrokes. Also, the contrast over the colour of the text.
Typeface: It's a nice choice of typeface for "BRS". It's has this army-commando feel to it. Compare it to Black Rock Shooter, who is in an active pose, and you get a complete expression of action in this whole artwork.
Overall, the quality of the artwork is nicely done. I probably agree with =acacin about the face, but then chibi is chibi (unless anyone knows how to draw those dynamic faces on chibis).
I like the super hero type of look you have given this - at least that is how it appears simply based on the way the character is displayed. The same goes for the text and chains, (including the bars). The colors are quite distintive too. Moreover, the way you have captured the flames to the hair really reinforces that picture of movement. I would suggest placing a more dynamic aspect of expression on the character's face just as she is dynamic in the picture. The texture is practically on point and this overall makes for a excellent refined design. Excellent work!
She's chibi!!! It looks great, and her expression is perfect (some people try to make her have this innocent expression, which doesn't suit her in my opinion). I must say that she's quite adorable without looking like you're trying too hard to make her fit into the cute category.

I'll always look forward to more marker artworks.
