Materials: Multiliner and Copic Sketch markers on Moleskine sketch book. Time: 8 hours.
This was originally one of my sketches for Sketchavember, then I decided to color it because I haven't used my markers for awhile. The yellowness of the background is because of the cream/off-white tint of sketch book paper. I decided not edit it out on Photoshop because I think it actually looks nicer than if it were just plain white. The whiter areas are where I erased too furiously and the paper color actually faded off OTL;;;
It's actually pretty hard coloring on this paper because the marker bleeds a lot more than usual TAT;; But overall it was a quick, stress-relieving drawing. Very relaxing to color, yes just ignore those BS dress folds (-ι_- )
I haven't critiqued in a while, so bear with me. When I first saw this in a feature journal, I was immediately drawn to it. First of all, I really like the color balance; There are enough complimentary colors and opposing colors for there to be a very interesting diversity. Another thing I appreciate it the shading; it is not at all overdone like many artists out there; subtle, but clearly well done. The background, while still subtle, is quite attractive; it is definitely a minimalistic and inspiring one, reminding me of Japanese ukiyo-e painting style. Anyways, back to the shading; the character's hair and top of her dress in particular are VERY impressive. However, one area where you may (in my opinion) want to touch up is the bottom of her dress; it's not that big of an issue as it still looks great, but there is little sense of continuation of the top shading style. Fantastically done; I believe you've created a masterpiece.
It is a very beautiful artwork. The colors complement each other perfectly! The style is very very unique, no wonder so many people love this! The deatails are AWESOME. What caught my eye was the deatails you put into the dress/fabric. It takes awhile to get the feel of drawing fabric and all the folds. But you nailed it perfectly! It's a very soft feel It also gives the impact of drama/sorrow. Its different from your usual works because it looks very refined and elegant. The name suits it well. All and all... "Doll" is a VERY VERY good drawing. Keep going forward! (lol)
What colors do you normally use for skin? I use pale fruit pink/skin white for pale characters, and mix in flesh pink or barley beige for others...Yours just look really clean.
