Time: 60+ hours. Materials: TRADITIONAL. Copic multiliner and Copic sketch markers. Size: 3 pieces of A4 paper taped together (approximately 11.5 x 22 inches), digitally connected using Photoshop CS3.
There are 18 Elebits total (the little red and blue creatures). Can you find them all?
If you guys were wondering about my sudden two-month hiatus, THIS WAS WHY. I've been working on and off (mostly off OTL;; ) on this piece for about 6 weeks in preparation for Anime Expo artist alley. Consider it a tribute to all the games and gamers out there!
The Nintendo DS is probably my favorite console along with my trusty old school PS2. DS ports many of my favorite series, so I figured I can cram them all into one picture since I'm too lazy to draw separate pictures of each of the O3O
It was very hard choosing which games to put in here. If I had more time and paper space, I'd stick quite a few more in there, but was big enough as it is. There is a total of 47 characters from 16 different games in this piece.
The sketching was the hardest and longest part, for sure. Coloring went relatively smooth except for those little elebits that's practically invading every corner of the picture. The smallest one is about 1/3 the size of my fingernail. I spent some time studying the art of each game because I didn't want to deviate TOO far from the original style. Each game has its own way of lining and coloring, and I tried to incorporate those aspects into my own style without having everything look like a huge mess. I ended up with a somewhat organized clutter.
Drawing and coloring the picture was only half battle. Connecting three separately scanned pictures took about five hours on its own. I became very acquainted with the clone tool because of this. Sadly, a lot of the colors and shades were lost through scanning. I had to go back and adjust individual colors to make it look like the original, but there are still some that can't be fixed (darn those reds and oranges) orz;;
Girl playing the DS in the front designed by me. Game characters (c) whoever they belong to.
List of games included: Final Fantasy (Chocobo Tales, Tactics, Crystal Chronicles), Pokemon, Professor Layton, Super Mario, Mario Kart, World Ends With You, Kirby, Elebits, Phoenix Wright, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Harvest Moon, Disgaea, Bomberman, Ninja Town.
Also, I'M SORRY IF I DIDN'T INCLUDE YOUR FAVORITE GAME. I COULDN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE AFTER FILLING THREE PIECES OF PAPER.
First i'd like to say that even the concept of this drawing, although surely thought of before, is one that is very difficutl to accomplish! Many people have thought to themselves that they want to draw a bunch of characters that are all interacting, and showing off thiee rindividual personallities, without relying too heavily on references in order to maintain originality.
I have to say, you've done so almost perfectly. I say almost, because nothing is ever perfect. The coloring is very smooth and detailed ath the same time. This has to be one of the cleanest Traditional pieces i've ever seen!
Originality, i'd like to give a five, just because i can tell how long you've worked on this, and i definetly rate this as a eight out of five overall, but i think of originality as a concept/ idea, and it's been thought of before, and i personally THANK you for doing it so well!
All in all, this work deserves appreciation from all!
My first impression when seeing this piece was, "Holy cow, how many things ARE THERE?!" I was drawn in quickly to the rest of the picture, and I'm glad I saw it, because there is a huge WOW factor here!
Vision: From first impressions - like the thumbnail - it seems like there's a lot going on. And there is! But this is not in a bad way at all - every character is easy to recognize, especially seeing as you drew them in their original style, which is not an easy task. And every character has a role, it seems - Layton's looking at the girl's outfit and game, the Kirby just seems to march, Phoenix is yelling at the crowd, Link is leading a follow-up band - even Mario and Luigi, in the back, are watching with confusion! Even the colors are stunning as well - each color is balanced, especially when you add in the background. The way it trickles off is only a slightly sudden touch - while it's abrupt, it's nothing extremely major to bother the picture. Vision definitely gets a five out of five!
Originality: I've seen some line-ups before of characters from different series following one player, yet this is with a renewed energy! Everybody has a purpose, whether serious, overdramatic, or even plain goofy! So while it's been done before, it's like a good casserole - adding one spice, like you did here, is like tasting a brand new dish! Originality from me is a 4.5!
Technique: Your patience is astounding. Not only was this done entirely with copic markers, but all are well-picked. Also considering that you spliced the pictures and then changed colors to get them back to their original coloring? I could hardly tell where you spliced it before I looked at the walkthrough, and even then I could hardly notice! Everything with the technique is stunning - another five out of five!
Impact: Put it all together: the colors, the action, the activities, the copics, the way everything is done - and it is absolutely stunning, not just as artwork, but as the story behind it as well. I have to give this a five out of five!
Overall, "GAME ON" is a wonderful picture that speaks loud and clear! It's just one example of an amazing gallery, and I'm frankly amazed by the talent. Excellent job cartoongirl7, and keep up the excellent work!
