Time: 60+ hours.
Materials: TRADITIONAL. Copic multiliner and Copic sketch markers.
Size: 3 pieces of A4 paper taped together (approximately 11.5 x 22 inches), digitally connected using Photoshop CS3.

WALKTHROUGH: [link]

There are 18 Elebits total (the little red and blue creatures). Can you find them all?

If you guys were wondering about my sudden two-month hiatus, THIS WAS WHY. I've been working on and off (mostly off OTL;; ) on this piece for about 6 weeks in preparation for Anime Expo artist alley. Consider it a tribute to all the games and gamers out there!

The Nintendo DS is probably my favorite console along with my trusty old school PS2. DS ports many of my favorite series, so I figured I can cram them all into one picture since I'm too lazy to draw separate pictures of each of the O3O

It was very hard choosing which games to put in here. If I had more time and paper space, I'd stick quite a few more in there, but was big enough as it is. There is a total of 47 characters from 16 different games in this piece.

The sketching was the hardest and longest part, for sure. Coloring went relatively smooth except for those little elebits that's practically invading every corner of the picture. The smallest one is about 1/3 the size of my fingernail. I spent some time studying the art of each game because I didn't want to deviate TOO far from the original style. Each game has its own way of lining and coloring, and I tried to incorporate those aspects into my own style without having everything look like a huge mess. I ended up with a somewhat organized clutter.

Drawing and coloring the picture was only half battle. Connecting three separately scanned pictures took about five hours on its own. I became very acquainted with the clone tool because of this. Sadly, a lot of the colors and shades were lost through scanning. I had to go back and adjust individual colors to make it look like the original, but there are still some that can't be fixed (darn those reds and oranges) orz;;

Game characters (c) whoever they belong to.

List of games included: Final Fantasy (Chocobo Tales, Tactics, Crystal Chronicles), Pokemon, Professor Layton, Super Mario, Mario Kart, World Ends With You, Kirby, Elebits, Phoenix Wright, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Harvest Moon, Disgaea, Bomberman, Ninja Town.

Also, I'M SORRY IF I DIDN'T INCLUDE YOUR FAVORITE GAME. I COULDN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE AFTER FILLING THREE PIECES OF PAPER.

First time doing an online art critique, hope this goes right...

Vision: To create a picture filled with multiple characters on a scene is a challenging feat. To make these characters act in a coherent form, as if to achieve the purpose of interaction, is a much higher level of achievement altogether. The artist has clearly demonstrated both aspects and maintained a coherence in reactions and actions across the picture. Well deserved 5 stars in this regard, as the complexity of the picture showed the high level of thought applied to the picture.

Originality: Athough the franchises used are already in the mainstream and hence, well known by most, the way the characters interact in this picture is something unique in its own right. It can be the Mario Brothers looking confused in the background or a shocked Phoenix finding out he is out of context. Regardless, the unique interactions between the characters makes this picture original, though the characters in essence are not. Hence, 4.5 stars would seem reasonable to me in this regard.

Technique: The detail of the artwork and the smooth transition section on the left (Where the artist (presumed) is playing the game console) hints at the class of the artist in using colour and effects to highlight the creation/crossing of new boundaries into new territories, much similar to animation effects of adding colour to a blank screen as if to reveal new surroundings. That, as well as the ability to use a variety of colours to accurately display the variety present in this picture, gives me the suggestion that the artist has displayed a level of extraordinary skill. 5 Stars may well justify the rating in this regard.

Impact: When I first came across this picture, I was struck by the wide variety of characters in that picture, as well as the potential range of emotions which can be unearthed from this picture, most notably nostalgia. The facial expressions and poses of the different characters also provides the signature which defines the character to the point where it is easily noticeable and recognisable. The ease of which I can connect (and hopefully many of us do) with this picture and its inherent meaning can therefore be deserving of a 5 star value.

On the whole, I think this art piece truly justified its place as one of the most popular pieces on dA. (Found it on dA homepage when I used the gauge: Most Popular of All time) My congratulations to the author of creating such an ambitious piece!

The true gem of this piece is the comical vignette of the Mario Bros in the background. It really makes the piece as a whole tell a story and allows imagination to fly off into infinity, as portrayed by the next gen character raptly walking off into the cute unknown. I would also like to note, I truly enjoy characters being portrayed in non-violent ways. Whilst Nintendo is not known for being too violent, I am happy to see no goombas being stomped. It really has a 'party' feel such as is present in manga and anime, usually when the story has run it's course but the creators want to give fans one last cavalcade parade of their favorite characters. The execution is brilliants, colorful, and most importantly playful. In the halls of FanArt greatness, I'd say this ranks up there. I'm envious of the creator. This image will probably adorn more windows backgrounds, screensavers, ds cases, and composition books than we will ever know.
