Got reacquainted with my dear old markers this spring break! It's been such a long time since I had the time to sit down and use them that I couldn't even recall the names/numbers of the colors orz;; Traditional art is long and tedious, but there's nothing like ink all over your hands and getting a faceful of ethanol fumes every few minutes
I've been marathoning my old Ghibli movies, and was reminded of how much I loved them from childhood until now. Howl's Moving Castle will always be one of my favorites! I am very thankful for Miyazaki for bringing a little more magic to this world with his films ;v;
Will be selling prints of this at Fanime (San Jose) and Anime Expo (LA) 2012! There are also some WIP shots posted in my tumblr if anyone is interested!
First of all, I'm really captivated by this piece. It is one of the best "Howl's Moving Castle" fanarts I have seen to date and definitely worth all the hard work you've put into it.
What really makes this piece extraordinary is the element of movement created by the falling stars that surround Sophie and Howl.
All I'd suggest is a variation of value from the background to the foreground. To be honest, when I first looked at this I could not find Howl's arms.
Overall, I'd definitely call this a masterpiece and buy it at Fanime if I could.
I myself don't believe that the negative space is such an issue in this piece since there is plenty of other details added to make the art more lively. There are many ways of making art and no piece is at all perfect because there is no such thing as perfect art. It is all different and unique in it's own way and I think you displayed great depth but not too much to lead away from the main characters. The lines are very fine and good and your style is of course something to be amazed at. I'm looking forward to more of your art. But if there is something you would like to work on then I would say that you should use more depth in your coloring to make the image pop even more. This image feels more serene so the colors shouldn't be too bright and they are more light and peaceful. You did fantastic! Great job!
Kyyaa!! This is... Wonderful! Amazing! I LOVE it so much! I also didn't miss what you did! ;D You gave Sophie one of Howl's earrings ;D Super wonderful piece! I wish I could print it >.< lol
