Description

Materials: Multiliners, Copic Sketch markers.
Time: 10 hours.

I've been really busy with school, but recently found some time to doodle and color something for stress relief \o/

The characters are original, so they're not from any series o3o I love designing clothes for characters, I think it's really fun and gets my creative juices flowing.

The background is very experimental; I wanted to do something abstract (a floral silhouette outline), but turns out it's a lot harder to do by hand OTL;; Same with the polka dot pattern, which I tried to use a ruler for as guidelines. It messed me up more than helped, so I ended up eyeballing the rest of the pattern and it finally came out looking more natural \o/

I hope I'll have more time this semester to draw. Upper division classes are a killer OTL;;;

Critique time!
Ok, so first of all, I feel the need to point out that you style DID change. Just a bit, but I had noticed something different while watching your LS, and now that I can see it up close, I was RIGHT. Some good, some bad. I'll get there though.

Vision: "You Promise?" That title honestly reflects this piece so well. I can HEAR the girl asking her friend from this picture. That's how well you portrayed the body language, and the emotions. I have to say, this picture is by far THE BEST you've ever done with the facial expressions. The brown-haired girl has really soft, sincere, and sweet eyes, and the way her mouth is opened adds even more to her emotions. The black-haired girl looks as sincere as her closed-eye-bright-grin seems to show. The body language is very good as well, with one girl clutching her friend's arm in an embrace while her friend is kinda allowing her to be pulled along. It's all very sweet, and I love the whole mood of this. C:

Originality: While the idea is cute, it's done many many times, but I'm not really complaining. The character are definitely original. (since, you know, you MADE them) So the idea isn't very unique in itself, but it's cute all the same. I honestly don't really care for this portion. I like the whole concept too much to bash it anyways. Friendship

Technique: As usual, even if you haven't done copic art in a while, I think your execution of the coloring is magnificent as always. However, this time, I do have more to say.
First thing I noticed was your skin coloring. It looks significantly different. The shadows are more pronounced. Some places, like the neck, and the legs, looks good like that, but I feel like some parts of the face and in particular, the brown-hair girl's right hand, have shadows that are too dark. It looks a lot like a lot of makeup, rather than shadows. So some parts good, some parts not as much.
Your hair coloring style also looks different. I actually rather like this new way. The gradients are portrayed better. Only thing I'd say is figuring out the light source from looking at the hair. It seems to be coming from both sides.
I LOVE the coloring on the clothes. Those folds in their shirts are brilliant, and I love how you used different colors on the brown-hair girl's shirt, instead of just using different shades of one color. Only real complain I'd voice about the clothes is the bear on the sweatshirt. It's flat colored, and for sure, too much of a hassle to shade, but it just looks so....flat, compared to the wonderful folds all over their clothes.
The only drawing/anatomy complaint I have are the legs. They are much skinnier than what you usually draw, which in turn, gave me the illusion that they were out of proportion (but they weren't). They were just so....skinny. Mostly just the thighs.
And the BACKGROUND. I liked it quite a bit, to be honest. At first glance, it was a bit strange, but as I looked at it more, it really grew on me. I like the outline take on it. If you had actually filled it in with details and colors, all the focus would have shifted to the background, and we wouldn't want that! What really makes my heart soar are the birds flying overhead. *pun indeed* -shot- For some reason, the coloring on the cat and bunny silhouettes give me the impression that it wasn't smooth. I'm still trying to figure that out. It looks like the edges are lighter and fuzzy. I think it may have to do with the polka dots creating his illusion. But I really like the polka dots, so I guess there's no pleasing me. -sigh-

Impact: The bubbly happiness this picture radiates made me feel warm on this cold October afternoon. I couldn't help but smile at their expressions, and admire the colors. And I wasn't joking when I said the bird made my heart soar. -shot again- I didn't even see them until I took a closer look at the background, and zoomed out. When I saw the picture as a whole, It really came together, and gave me such a happy feeling on the inside. I really really love this piece, and you deserve a pat on the back for producing this piece amidst your busy busy college schedule!

Cheers!

PS: Oops, I ranted.
PSS: I noticed I missed your Photoshop-editting LS, and that really bummed me out, since I wanted to see how you fix your scans. I don't suppose you'll do it again for your next piece? -hopes to catch it next time-
